Pet Smoothie Recipe - A Simple, Nutritious Treat For Dogs And Cats
A homemade pet smoothie is an easy way to add hydration, fiber, and gentle nutrients to your dog’s or cat’s day. It’s quick to make, easy to portion, and surprisingly budget-friendly. You control the ingredients, so there are no mystery additives.
Prep Time 5 minutes mins
Total Time 5 minutes mins
- 1/2 cup plain, unsweetened kefir or plain yogurt (lactose-free if needed)
- 1/2 cup low-sodium bone broth or water (for cats, water or tuna water in moderation)
- 1/4 cup pumpkin puree (100% pumpkin, not pie filling)
- 1/4 cup ripe banana or peeled apple slices (no seeds, core, or skin for apple)
- 1 tablespoon smooth, unsalted peanut butter or almond butter (xylitol-free)
- 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed or chia seeds
- Optional add-ins (choose 1–2):
- 2–3 blueberries or a small strawberry
- 1 teaspoon cooked, mashed carrot
- 1 teaspoon canned sardine (in water, no salt) for cats or dogs
- 1 teaspoon fresh parsley (dogs) for breath support
Prep your base. Add kefir or yogurt and bone broth (or water) to a blender. This creates a creamy but sippable texture.
Add the produce. Scoop in the pumpkin and add banana or apple pieces. These add fiber and natural sweetness without refined sugar.
Blend in healthy fats. Add nut butter and ground flaxseed or chia seeds.
These support a glossy coat and help digestion.
Choose add-ins (optional). Toss in 1–2 optional items based on your pet’s taste and needs. Keep total fruit low for cats and sensitive dogs.
Blend until smooth. Start low, then increase speed until the mixture is silky. Add a splash more liquid if it’s too thick.
Taste test (safely). Dip a finger to check consistency, not flavor.
If it’s too rich, thin with water or broth.
Serve smart. Offer a small portion first to gauge your pet’s reaction. Store the rest as directed below.
